Will our beloved house tigers soon seize world domination? It's not that improbable, considering the number. Because one or more cats live in over seven million households. In total there are over 8.2 million cats in Germany. Our beloved velvet paws are by far the most popular pet in Germany. In the meantime, cats have been kept as pets for a whopping 9,500 years.

Do the millions of cats endanger the bird population?

Given the large number of cats, there are also critical voices from science. Prof. Dr. Peter Berthold from the Radolfzell ornithological station on Lake Constance, for example, sees the increasing population as "a problem that has to be tackled decisively", the magazine quotes the ornithologist "at a glance". The situation was "dramatic" because the large number of cats massively endangered the bird population and other small animals.

Naturschutzbund Deutschland sees no danger

The Naturschutzbund Deutschland, however, sees it differently: "In Germany there have always been numerous land predators, including the European wild cat. We do not have flightless bird species - therefore we will probably never completely exterminate any bird species," explains Lars Lachmann, in turn bird expert at the nature conservation association.
